Don't be scared. Now that you know what's going on you can make smarter choices so you're eating a lot but it's stuff baby needs. Also, I think most women get scared of gaining while pregnant (I am!) but we have the confidence that comes from knowing we have sucessfully and healthily lost weight before and we can do it again when the time is right!

I lost 50 lbs. before I got pregnant and now I'm up 10 lbs. @ 20 weeks pregnant. It's scary but I know I'm not going to get back to 200 pounds and I know that gaining baby weight is so different from the fat gains I made in high school and college!

Do you know how far along you are?

Sonia, Hi!  I don't have any advice for you, but I just found out that I'm pregnant last week as well.  This is my first, and while I'm starting out at a good weight (127/5'6") I'm terrified of gaining weight in my first trimester (once I found out that the baby needs about 85 calories a day and a 0-3 lb gain is normal) and don't really know how much I should be eating.  I'm not eating a lot more, but I'm weirded out by how dizzy I get and how often I need to eat something now.  I'd love to talk sometime and exchange notes on what's going on.  I'm excited to find someone else here who's just starting out!

aeether : thanks for replying! i know im just freaking out but i just couldnt beleive how hungry i am lol <3 thanks for the comfort! i am only 8 weeks and i never knew something as big as a pumpkin seed could make me so hungry and so sick and so tired lol <3 its neat though im excited :oD

Irothell: i would love to share stuff with you! i feel dizzy quite frequently too but yeah like you said its better when you eat a bit lol. something i found that made me feel better is 1) were supposed to gain like 20 lbs and 2) breastfeeding is crazy draining on your body and practily *supposedly* melts off alot of the baby weight! i was talking to my husband about that last night and he laughd and said " funny, almost like someone planed for that to be that way". Laughing thank you both for replying!

When they say "eating for two", don't take that literally.

During pregnancy your body only needs about 300 extra calories a day, and even if you aren't eating enough, the baby will derive all the nutrients it needs from YOUR body.  You'll starve before the baby will starve

Actually, it's not true that the baby will take what it needs from the mother to the point of starving the mother, but the extra calorie count sounds about right.  Pre-natal vitamins should prevent any nutritional deficiencies.  OP, if you're like me and you get nausea if you're not constantly eating bread or dairy products, see a doctor for some anti-nausea meds.  I didn't, and gained 65lbs despite working out all the way through my pregnancy.  It came off again, but the stretch marks are horrendous.
