So I've been wondering, I bought some soup and noticed it had enriched wheat flour in it (new england clam chowder, so good!)...I've been sticking to whole grains for bread, but whole grain flour soup is hard to find. I've been maintaining my weight pretty well, and this is the first time i've had enriched flour in a really long time, is this stuff really that bad for me, even tho I'm watching what I'm eating calorie wise, etc?
It might not be as nutritionally dense as whole wheat, but it's definetly not bad for you. Besides it's in a freaken england clam chowder, what type of flour is in it is the least of it's problems. lol
No, it's not really bad for you. The differences between refined flour and whole grain flour are that refined is broken down faster, and that whole grain has more fiber (and sometimes protein).
There's not going to be much flour in any soup.... it's only acting as a thickener. Flour isn't 'bad for you' in any event. White flour is a good source of energy, even if it doesn't have the bran fibre and wheatgerm present in wholemeal flour.
The flour is used to thicken the soup. It's not as if there's enough in there to do you any harm, no matter WHAT type it is.
