Learn to Run - Who wants to do this with me??
*** New People Always Welcome ***
Hey all! A few years ago I started a "learn to run" program at my local running store. About 1/2 way through I got shingles (nasty!) and I had to quit.
Now I want to start again. I am starting on Sunday, March 11 and would love it if anyone wanted to do this with me :)
It's an 8 week course. You should do it at least 3x a week so you're ready for the next week, & don't forget to stretch before & after. (I actually really like 4x a week & it really prepares me for the next week's numbers)
Take your car & figure out a 3.1 mile or 5 km route & then run/walk for the minutes it says below until you reach 3.1 miles or 5 km.
Week 1 - Walk 3 mins, Run 1 min
Week 2 - Walk 3 mins, Run 2 mins
Week 3 - Walk 2 mins, Run 3 mins
Week 4 - Walk 2 mins, Run 5 mins
Week 5 - Walk 2 mins, Run 7 mins
Week 6 - Walk 2 mins, Run10 mins
Week 7 - Walk 1 min, Run 14 mins
Week 8 - Walk 30 seconds, Run 18 mins
It also says for week 8, if you find that you don't HAVE to stop running after the 18 minutes, then by all means, carry on without the walking break.

Kim, I assume thats what it means!
Dee, I was thinking of going running tomorrow morning but I'm so hard on myself when I can't run for more than a couple of minutes at a time, so reading this has helped so much! I'm not sure how far 3 miles would be for me, but i might go for a walk today and figure it out. I hate not driving! Haha. And by Sunday 9th I guess you mean tomorrow, Sunday 11th?
Good luck!

YAY! People wanna run with me! Thanks guys!!!
kim - ya you walk for 3 minutes and run 1 until you get to 3miles. It's that easy!! Good luck! when will you start??
gemma - I'm glad you found this then, just so you can see that you really should start easier. As far as the distance, I'm just gonna take my car, cuz it has a distance tracker (well, you could just use your odometer I guess). And that way I know I'm as close as I can get. And yes, I mean sunday the 11th! silly me! Thanks!
Try & recruit someone to do it with you, it makes it easier to have someone "real" there to be accountible to. But let's track our progress together here & help each other out. I plan on doing it on Sundays/Tuesdays/Thursdays. Saturday's my day off of exercise, but if I get bored, I may throw in the occasional Saturday too :)

I'm going to measure my neighborhood running route with my car when I get home Sunday, then I will be all about starting this outside! I'm so glad it's warming up, and I don't have to rely on my treadmill (that was tossed out by my mom :[ ). I'm going to try to start at the Week 2 level, since I was getting along good on my other plan, but I fear two weeks of no exercise has done a lot more damage to my conditioning than I thought.
I'm going to try to do this Sun/Weds/Thurs/Fri. Mon/Tue I don't wake up with enough time to do it before work, although if it's still bearable outside in the evenings I might try to get it in after work on at least one of those days. I feel so blah about not having exercised in forever! And I used to get really bored with running outside when I didn't have a set distance goal, only a time goal, but now that I'm working toward a 5K I think things will be grand.
Good luck everyone!

WELL! Its 8.40am here and I just got back from my run! Thanks to THIS amazing site I worked out that my favourite walking circuit along the seafront and back to my house was exactly 3 miles, so I left at 7.45am and got started! I must say, I felt a little less than enthusiastic about it when I woke up this morning, I had really bad cramps, but I said to myself that I'd only do as much as my body wanted to, and I could go back at any point, so I didn't pressure myself like I usually do. I also heard that a little light excercise actually relieves cramping so I was all up for that! And it has :] My route took 45 minutes, and I managed to stick to the 'walk 3 - run 1' regime, which was actually fine. Yay! So now I'm going to go take a shower and get a cup of tea inside me!
Colby, I'm REALLY glad its warming up too, I even wore gloves this morning but didn't really need them which I was glad of. Good luck starting at Level 2, but if you think you might struggle theres no point pushing yourself too hard, why don't you start off your first run at Level one and then if you're finding it quite managable try doing the rest of it level 2? Kudos though, I couldn't do it just yet! :] Good luck

gemma - WAY TO GOOO! YOU DID IT ALREADY!!! I'm so proud of you. I'm going to be going soon, and I was wondering how long it was gonna take, so I guess you answered my question. I'm glad you were able to do the regime as it was outlined. I think I"ll be ok doing that too. Now I can't wait to go! I jsut neeed to have my lunch settle a bit so I don't get sick on the way!! lol! I'll check in when I get back!
What other days have you chosen to run??
colbers - let us know how it goes when you do it!!

Gemme, How does that amazing route tracking site work? I went there and pretty much didn't know what to do with the map.
Never mind. I figured it out. Okay. I'm in.
I DID IT!!!! Wow what a feeling!!!! I can't wait to do that again!!
Gemma - did you have a really "high" feeling when you were done??? I feel so great right now.
Managed to do it in 40 minutes, plus I walked for a few minutes through the park across the street from my house to cool down. I took the dogs too and they did pretty good. My old girl was limping a bit when we were almost home, but she does that even when we walk. She's always better after a little rest.
Ok, hopefully we get more people to join. I have another friend on the beach body site who's going to do it too.
keep on runnin!

I'm gonna do it!!
Is it ok to do it on a treadmill though?? I won't get that wonderful fresh air, or the tricky ground... But I'm a bit too nervous to do it outside at the moment... maybe in 8 weeks when I'm a pro! haha.

I did it! But with slight modification because of my recently adopted sedentary lifestye. I walked 3.5 miles to get my muscles ready. I took my husband too.
I was a member of Beach Body for a long time! I will rejoin in a couple of weeks when I reclaim my workout space. I have the Slim In 6 work out routine. It's great!
Tuesday and Thursday will be treadmill runs for me too.

buttonsxandxbows - yay for you, yes do it do it!!! And of course you can do it on a treadmill. In fact if we get a really windy day or if God Forbid, it snow, I'm gonna do it on the treadmill too!!
choirgirl - WAY TO GO!!!! It's not too bad doing the one minute jog, it seems to go by fast. Are you gonna try it next time?? I too am a Beach Body fan. I am currently doing Power 90 (on day 46 of 90 - yay! over 1/2 way there!) and then I'm gonna do the Power 90 Masters Series followed by Power 90X. I have Turbo Jam too but have only done a few workouts. I've never tried SI6 but I've heard it's good. Running will be a nice addition to the dvds!!
Only 8 weeks and we'll all be runnin for 18 minutes straight - can you believe it???? I can't!

:D
:D
This is perfect! I've just recovered from a long illness and started walking again, but I really would rather run. I just need to build up gradually. I also have a perfect route from my house, just about 3.1 miles. Hope it's okay if I start a day late!
The more the merrier! I hope it works for you guys too! :]
Dee, I had a more 'I'm going to die' feeling when I got back, but then I felt the high and it was wonderful! I'm not sure when I'll be able to go next, I need to work it out because I don't like running past 9am because it gets busier out but I have quite a few early classes, but I'm going to try Tuesdays and Thursdays this week and see how it pans out. Just washed my sweaty gym top ready for a second go tomorrow! Haha.
My legs ache a bit today, but thats only to be expected. I remember once I forced myself to run 5 minutes at a time (I was in no way prepared for it) and the next day I literally couldn't move, I had to send my best friend out of the room when I was there because when he made me laugh I'd be in agony! Never again lol!

I'd love to do this with you, but I'm going to have to start after I quit smoking. So, probably Saturdayyy? :)

Count me in! I have been thinking about getting into running now here is my chance.

YAY! More people!!! Just a note to all of you, I just got off the phone to Runner's Soul ( the shop I did this with b4 ) to confirm just how many days a week we should run. They say 3 for sure and no more than 5.
thesilverstar121 - welcome, please do give it a shot. As you can see from the schedule, it's not too demanding at first, and if you get out there at least 3x a week, you should be more than ready for the next week's goal!! Let us know how you do!
brightestblue - what a great way to finish your recovery! Take it easy & you'll do just fine I'm sure. Your route seems perfect for sure! Let us know how you do too!
gemma - so glad you felt the high! for me, it continued on for a long time. And then about 4 hrs later, I was pooped! ready for bed and man, did I sleep good last night! You'll be doing it on the days I do it too (Sun/Tues/Thurs & maybe sat if I feel up to it). I'm glad you weren't as sore as when you tried b4. I guess doing it gradually is better for sure. Don't forget to stretch b4 & after. Make sure you check in here after your run tomorrow. I will too!
suzymartin- sure girl! Start anytime you wish. What a great way to encourage yourself to not smoke! You can do it!!
thomolli - Here's your chance indeed. We're all beginners here ( I think ) so no pressure, just do your best! & keep in touch with how it feels
